Solo(s) Project House
6th Summer Residency
July 2016 – September 2016
Artist in Residence: David D. Oquendo
Friday, September 16th, 2016 | 6 – 9pm
Solo(s) Project House presents its sixth annual Summer Residency Program featuring New Jersey based artist David D. Oquendo. Over the summer months of July and August, Oquendo has worked in the main project space, developing a new body of work titled “Metaphrase: Idioms” that will be available to view September 16th during a residency reception from 6 – 9pm.
“Metaphrase: Idioms” is an installation that includes large scale wall renderings and mixed media paintings. The work explores the artist’s current course, a personal constructed script, calligraphy; the “Metaphrase”.
The genesis of the series is personal. The artist was diagnosed with a learning disability as a young child, causing difficulty in speech, comprehension, translation (Spanish – English) and writing. The non sequitur has become increasingly fascinating for the artist in regards to language, writing, idiomatic phrases and identity through language.
Each letter is a system that has been influenced by Gothic Blackletter and ciphers with hints of Arabic and Hebrew calligraphy. Oquendo’s script communicates idioms translated into English, poetry, and personal messages which are rarely immediately decipherable. Completion finds the balance between obfuscate text and the beauty of calligraphy.
