Solo(s) Project House will present an exhibition featuring the work of artist Joseph Gerard Sabatino. The exhibition “The Intestines Never Lie” will be on view from October 17 through December 15, 2014. A reception for the artist will be held on Friday, October 17th from 7-10pm in conjunction with the second weekend of the annual Newark Open Doors Tour.

“The Intestines Never Lie” engages the exhibition’s participants by having them directly involve themselves in the installation’s progression and ultimately completion. The tensions of industrial materials and brute force merge with simplistic personal narratives, literally and metaphorically. Gentile remarks “left by” the human hand are paired with the cold and stagnate imagery associated with rugged manufacturing. Harsh forms interact with delicate text and custom scripts by altering two dimensional and three dimensional approaches to the art experience.

The artist will create a site specific installation using heavy duty plastic, dangling chains hoisting stainless steel meathooks and pine shavings, transforming the entirety of the project space. Drawings from the series “Things You Wouldn’t Want to Hear,” will be paired with recent sculptural works shown for the first time. Whether contemplating fresh desserts forms, reading text or circling a space that demands viewer participation; The Intestines Never Lie will be sure to engage in the visceral, literal and emotional tensions of crude materials while questioning one’s relationship to them.

Joseph Gerard Sabatino began his journey as a photographer, but soon expanded into different materials and methods. After receiving his education from Montclair State University and Lorenzo di Medici Institute in Florence, Italy, Sabatino went on to exhibit in a variety of New York and New Jersey venues. Solo exhibitions include the AC Institute, Paterson Museum and The Dryfoos Gallery at Kean University. He has exhibited in Northern Kentucky University’s Underground Railroad exhibition and participated in Bittersweet: The Chocolate Show at Rutgers University. Sabatino was also selected to participate in three consecutive New Jersey Arts Annuals. Internationally, Sabatino has featured work in Florence, Italy as well as in Graz, Austria. The artist was a recipient of Aljira’s Emerge Artist Fellowship Program and was one of ten artists selected nationally for the William and Dorothy Yeck Award for Miami University’s “National Young Sculptors Competition.” His work has been reviewed or featured in The New York Times, NY ArtBeat, ArtVoices Magazine, The Herald News,The Star-Ledger, The Record and The Jersey City Reporter. This summer, Sabatino will install a public work at The Gateway Center II Causeway. “The Intestines Never Lie” will coincide with his NYC solo exhibition titled “Daily Rot” at SPH annex, R.Jampol Project(s), located at 191 Henry St. NYC.

Solo(s) Project House is located at 972 Broad St. in the arts district of downtown Newark, NJ. It is free and open to the public, Wednesday – Friday, 12 pm – 6pm.
